Monmouth County, one of New Jersey’s original four counties, was established in 1675. Its name is a source of debate and may come from the Rhode Island Monmouth Society, Monmouthshire in Wales, Great Britain, or James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. In 1778, the soldiers led by George Washington fought in the Battle of Monmouth near the present day county seat of Freehold in the longest land battle during the Revolutionary War.
